Great meeting last night, and well run, Buddah. Everybody had constructive comments and it's clear from the positive interaction that this is a terrific group of owners who gave some real thought to all the issues discussed rather than just flapping their gums. I'm really glad you and Rob rescued this league and that I decided to stay....F*ck Shodan!
However, one item we may have forgotten that was brought up in the forums is the QB Bonus rule that provides:
"15.12 QBs shall be awarded 10 bonus points for reaching 30 completions in a game."
I believe several of us think it's unnecessary "piling-on" points for QBs and should be eliminated. Maybe we can do a poll or something?

I agree that the 10-pt bonus for 30 completions is just ridiculous.
However, there's another "pile-on" rule for WR's in that they get a 10-pt bonus at 10 receptions (on top of the already 1pt per reception).
Do we vote to eliminate one and not the other... or do we vote to eliminate both?

Having few players if any on my team that would ever hit this bonus, I am for removing this and the WR bonus. My only concern is changing a rule that doesnt affect all teams the same. A team with Manning or Brady probably liked this rule alot and if your starting QB is Cutler or McNabb you probably want this removed immediately. Maybe lighten the bonus rather than remove it. The rule was in place when I assume you guys drafted so you knew getting a good QB was key with the scoring system.
Anyways- my vote would be to lessen the bonus to 5 points in both cases - but am good either way.

I'd eliminate it for both QBs & receivers.
Getting 10 extra points in a 100 pt/gm league, just because of one more completion or reception is a bit much. It's like saying if my PK kicks 3 or 4 field goals, I should get 10 extra points.
As I've said before, this DOES impact my team. During our 15 week season last year (incl. playoffs), my QB Drew Brees had 30+ completions 3 times. He also had 29 twice, and 28 twice -- which pissed me off!
Nevertheless, I still think these "pile-on" points are unrealistic and unfair given the small true added value in a game when a QB completes 30, rather than 29 passes, or a WR has 10 instead of 'only' 9 catches.

I'm fine with eliminating it but if we do keep it in, it should be lessened to even less than 5 points...I'd say like two. That way its not so out of whack with the rest of the scoring but still gives some consolation for the milestone.
Since my QB Cutler will be completing 15 passes a game to Brandon Marshall, I'm pretty sure he'll get to 30 on occasion.

How about, instead of completely eliminating the bonus, reduce it. Perhaps, reduce it to 3 pts? That's still rewarding the milestone without going overboard.
We currently give 5 bonus pts for hitting 300 yds passing (or 100 yds rushing or receiving).

3 seems like a fair compromise. I assume you mean for both WR and QB? They need to be the same in my opinion. If I have a QB and my opponent has the WR, I think the bonuses should offset each other.

That is what I meant.
Instead of a 10 pt bonus at 30 comp; make it a 3 pt bonus.
Instead of a 10 pt bonus at 10 recepts; make it a 3 pt bonus.
Just a thought... let me know what you guys think.

I like the compromise of awarding 3 points under the QB/WR Bonus rule. Although Loq's kind of led the charge on this one, here's a situation where I believe the "I built my team on last year's rules" argument has some real merit. If you look at Kyle's roster, he's built his team around a stable of stud WRs: Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, & THE Steve Smith. Last year during our ff season, they combined for 4 games of 10+ receptions, and had three 9 catch games (and Williams was out the last half of the season). To totally eliminate the 10 point bonus will decrease Kyle's TPs by probably at least around 40-60 this year, or about 3-4 pts/gm. That's quite a kick to the groin. I think we should save Loq from himself on this one, and just reduce the QB/WR Bonus from 10 to 3 pts. ---------------- EDIT: Kyle's also got Peyton Manning & Brian Westbrook. My God. Why am I feeling sorry for this man?  |

I'm all for eliminating both of these pile on scoring rules. Extremely excessive. As long as Kyle is ok with the move, because he gets screwed over big time.

There are some excellent points being made and I think that what would be in the best interest of the league would be to just reduce the bonus from 10 to 3, instead of eliminating it.
3 pts isn't an excessive amount, and it still rewards those high-performance players with something, which addressess Barrister's point about how you may have built your teams.

Westbrook probably had at least 1 or 2 games with a ton of receptions. Manning had to have had a decent game in there as well. Peyton and Westbrook each had one “Pile-On” Bonus game. When AP goes over 200 yards 3 or 4 times this year does he get 10 bonus points each time? Actually, if AD hits 201 yards, I think he'll get 15 points. But that rule's similar to the ones we're keeping for QB/WR/TEs. I think that's a deserving reward for those kind of monster games. So I have no problem with it...as long as they don't do it against me. |

I don't care one way or another, but it should be equal for all positions IMO.. |

Personally, I like rewarding players for monster games as they don't happen all of the time. I could care less which way we go with this but I think we need to keep all of the positions in relative value and importance.

15.23 RBs shall be awarded 5 bonus points for each 50 total passing, rushing and receiving yards starting with 100 total passing, rushing and receiving yards.
Ok, after reading how it's written I'm more ok with it as the difference between 199 yds and 200 yds is not 15 points as I read Barrister's original post...it's an additional 5.

Also:
15.22 RBs shall be awarded 1pt for each 20 total passing, rushing and receiving yards
So, when TJ Duckett hits 201 yards in a game (for the 5th time in 2008)... he will get:
201 = 10pts (rule 15.22)
100 yd bonus = 5 (rule 15.23)
150 yd bonus = 5 (rule 15.23)
200 yd bonus = 5 (rule 15.23)
TOTAL OF 25 PTS
that's a big pay-day, for a big play-day.
TJ Duckett is now available for trade, but Barrister was right - it was a 15 point bonus if you hit 200 yds.

Looking at the stats of this league from last season - of the top 30 players you had
12 QBs (expected)
11 WR
2 TE
and only 5 RB. (Addai and Portis barely made the list)
Now I dont know how much reducing the bonuses will knock down WR, but you arent going to find too many leagues where WR has such a drastic value ratio to RB. I would be opposed to reducing any RB scoring.

I agree, and I don't think that will include knocking down any of the RB's points for that reason alone.
The reduction of those "super-bonuses" for QB and WR should help to balance out those numbers a little more.
I can try to mimick the scoring set-up into a mock-up for offense, and see what the top 30 would have looked like for 2007 with those bonuses reduced to get a better feel.
